Abstract

The negative attitude of the Hussites toward instrumental music and dance is related to their iconoclasm and iconophobia. Their focus on the written word and aversion to anything that distracted one's attention from it, including music, resulted in rhythmic alterations to older melismatic and polyphonic songs, as demonstrated in the well-known Hussite hymn Ktož jsou boží bojovníci (Who are God's warriors?). The question whether the Hussite delegation sang the hymn Bóh všemohúcí (Christ is risen) during their departure from the Council of Basel in 1433 is also discussed.
