Abstract

Italian opera dominated the theatrical repertoire in 18th-c. Prague until it was replaced by German opera after 1807. The Pražská Konzervatoř, founded in 1808, revived interest in Italian opera in 1822 through the appointment of the singing teacher Giovanni Battista Gordigiani. Under his guidance, students performed Mozart's Italian operas in the original language, both at the conservatory and the Stavovské Divadlo, until 1843.
