Abstract

A review of editorial principles from the second half of the 19th c. to the beginning of the 20th c., as applied in editions of the complete works of Bach (1850), Händel (1858), Beethoven (1862), Mendelssohn (1874), Schubert (1883), Liszt (1905), and Brahms (1926). After 1950, changes in editorial methodology reflected a growing interest in performance practice. The Dvořák complete edition of 1955 is incompatible with current editorial requirements.
