Abstract

The question of whether to adapt the language and style of opera librettos to current linguistic norms is proposed to be similar to the problem of whether to perform an opera in the original language or in translation. It is argued that any adjustment or modernization is inappropriate, and that original language and diction should be preserved. Dvořák's tragic opera Vanda to a libretto by Václav Beneš-Šumavský and František Zákrejs is considered as an example.
