Abstract

Explores Dvořák’s composition of symphony no. 9, Z Nového světa (From the New World), in particular his use of elements of African-American music. He may have been inspired by the article Negro music, published under the pseudonym Johann Tonsor in the Chicago journal Music (December 1892), by the writer, song collector, and composer Mildred J. Hill of Louisville, Kentucky.
