Abstract

The Belgian Symbolist poet and playwright Maurice Maeterlinck was an important influence in particular on Alexander von Zemlinsky and Schoenberg. Of the two, Zemlinsky had the more intimate understanding of Maeterlinck's writing; for Schoenberg, Maeterlinck was chiefly important as an initiator of the aesthetic revolution that he and Kandinsky were carrying forward toward atonality and abstraction. In addition to Schoenberg's symphonic poem Pelleas und Melisande, op. 5 both composed settings of Maeterlinck poems, from the German translation by Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski and Karl Klammer (pseudonym K.L. Ammer; Jena, 1906): Zemlinsky's Sechs Gesänge op. 13, and Schoenberg's song Herzgewächse op. 20.
