Abstract

Under the influence of increasing tension in the international relations A. Rothschild and P. Kupelwieser decided to product partly also the war material in Vítkovice. P. Kupelwieser was inspired when visiting Krupp works (1884). After Krym-war in Russia and civil war in USA the production of ship's armour plates in the world has began. In the eighties, the compound plates from Cammel-Sheffield and the casehardening plates from Schneider-Creusot dominated on the market. In the first half of nineties two new processes of Harvey and Krupp appeared. The beginning of the armour plates production in Vítkovice is connected with the work of then general director Paul Kupelwieser. In 1891-1892, he had already obtained a contract to deliver the armour plates for three warships of Austrian-Hungarian navy. These plates were produced in Vítkovice by it's own simple process. Two events in spring 1893 caused the turnover: on 3. 4. 1893 Kupelwieser (adherent of Krupp) resigned from the post of director of ironworks and on 3. 5. 1893 his successor Emil Holz concluded the license-treaty with Harvey Steel Co. A table with all deliveries of Vítkovice armour plates from 1892 to 1897 is presented in the conclusion.
