Abstract

Various products from the oxidation of 3-heteroarylthiomethyl-ceph-3-ems using <i>m</i>-chloroperbenzoic acid (<i>m</i>-CPBA) and hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid in varying stoichiometric ratios have been isolated, identified and their in vitro antimicrobial activity determined. The oxidized compounds with the 2-aminothiazol-4-yl-(<i>Z</i>)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido side chain showed better antibacterial activity against various Gram negative bacteria compared to the unoxidized compounds.
