Abstract

The novel eighteen-vertex macropolyhedral dithiaborane anion [S<sub>2</sub>B<sub>16</sub>H<sub>17</sub>]<sup>–</sup> <b>1</b> has been obtained as its [tmndH]<sup>+</sup> salt from the reaction of [S2B<sub>17</sub>H<sub>17</sub>] <b>2</b> and tmnd in solution in the presence of [RhCl<sub>2</sub>(η<sup>5</sup>-C5Me<sub>5</sub>)]<sub>2</sub>. It has two cluster skeletal electrons more than the three previously reported eighteen-vertex dithiaborane {S<sub>2</sub>B<sub>16</sub>} species <i>n</i>-[S<sub>2</sub>B<sub>16</sub>H<sub>16</sub>], <i>n</i>-[S<sub>2</sub>B<sub>16</sub>H<sub>15</sub>]<sup>–</sup> and <i>iso</i>-[S2B<sub>16</sub>H<sub>16</sub>], and the anion consists structurally of an <i>arachno</i> {SB<sub>9</sub>} and a <i>nido</i> {B<sub>9</sub>} cluster unit fused with two boron atoms in common, and with an <i>endo</i>-to-<i>exo</i> sulfur bridge that also links the two subclusters together.
